The Unrecognised Spiritual Abilities

Just as a small child has distorted knowledge about the world of adults, exactly so does it look today in the case of men with their knowledge of the spiritual abilities
Of that which could make the human world spiritually adult, and thereby truly great and advanced, men know almost nothing
And yet at the same time a great part of them suppose that we find ourselves precisely at the summit of all knowledge and surpass earlier generations in that mankind is by much further in all its knowing
This view, however, is formed solely from the standpoint of the material investigation of matter
That pride of a supposed progress therefore rests only upon the narrow scientific research into the particulars of the earthly world, without anything higher being drawn by men into this view, anything that belongs to the true preciousness of the spiritual origin of man
It may be said that it is therefore only a naive playing at being someone great
It is a playing at being grown up, such as is wont to be known among children
However much nothing of the true knowledge of the world of adults is their own in their earthly immaturity of body, small children suppose that they could be just the same as those big people are from their point of view
As it is in the case of children, exactly so it stands with mankind in the matter of its spiritual development
It may perhaps sound hard to the ear, but it is in place to say that mankind is still spiritually very unripe
The real spiritual abilities in man still only slumber
It is so because sufficient attention was never devoted to spiritual questions, for this was not the concern of materially minded men, of whom there was always the great majority
But it is also because the condition for the unfolding of each of the spiritual abilities is at the same time the development in maturity and the ennoblement of all that has already been gained
And precisely this was regarded only very half-heartedly, indeed by intellectual men it is even held to be a weakness in a man if he strives for honourable dealing and for good
Therein lies precisely that great pitfall which sets itself as an obstacle to the ascent in spiritual growth
Growth can come about only in connection with the unfolding of an all-embracing volition for good
The talents bestowed upon the spiritual spark for the path of development had therefore to remain permanently unused, save for the few exceptions of those courageous ones who, despite all hindrances from others, set out upon the path of good
It is so because even that most basic quality of the human intuitive perception, such as love and the capacity for compassion with one's fellow men, is husbanded only very half-heartedly
There is no greater indictment of today's world of men, when it shows itself that it still acts as the most selfish species, which through whole millennia has actually not developed in its spiritual inner being even a small piece higher
Were it otherwise, there would no longer be on Earth any of the hitherto manifestations of malice, of calculation, of greed, and of the tensions flowing therefrom which lead to the most varied kinds of violence, reaching even to wars
The great words about the necessity of the struggle for the ideals of the present modern society, about national or religious questions, or even the mere excuses of a necessary self-defence, would have swiftly to collapse, for it would show itself that with good will there is always a way to the attaining of harmony, or at the least to mutual respect
Thereby, however, there is only long postponed upon this Earth the capacity for the unfolding of the true spiritual powers in man, which in their use would bring him fulfilment and the experiencing of happiness
The efforts of some men, who indeed strive for the awakening of higher spiritual abilities, are usually accompanied not by pure intuitive perception but by the vanity of awakening in themselves something extraordinary, which bears within it the mystery of unrecognised abilities
Often this wrong volition is even marked by a self-centred pride and by the endeavour to excel above others
That can never bring true happiness and fulfilment, for therein is lacking the blessing of the Divine Law of Love
It is called by various names, and many ways are used for it, which however from the beginning bear the mark of a wrong striving
The true spiritual abilities can unfold only in complete accord with a pure and noble volition for good, not only for oneself but also for one's fellow men and for the whole of Creation
Something such, however, is lacking in the greater part of those movements which in childish self-conceit occupy themselves with the development of spiritual abilities in man
Thus there had to come upon Earth a condition which is part of the human world in well-nigh all its doings
It is a complete poverty in respect of the blessing of the true spiritual abilities, which remain deeply asleep, covered over by the materialism of the long-continued cultivation of the intellectual brain
But this is now to change
The time for the awakening, and therewith the hour for the change into spiritual enlightenment of a far greater number of men, is here
It comes as a demand for a developmental advance of the whole of human society
And yet it could have been so already long ago, decades since, but it was marked by the lack of understanding and by the immaturity of those who lived at that time in gross material bodies on Earth
To them it was given, through high guidance on the part of spiritual helpers, to come to the knowledge of the work of the Grail Message
But although they held its earthly form in their hands, their spirit was not able in that time to tear itself free from the influence of ingrained processes of thought
Thus the greater part of the precious treasure contained in the book they read through remained closed
It may not be regarded as a failure, but only as a lack of comprehension of the true values which for the human spirit are to be found in the work of the Grail Message
The true values were in incomprehension laid aside, while the concentration of all interest bound itself only to the old forms, which there was an endeavour to alter, although this was never possible
These forms, however, could not endure nor bring blessing nor any advance, and therefore there always finally formed out of them gross materially varied shapes of community, which however must always be marked by something that, from the standpoint of the necessary development, already counts as old and thereby as to be rejected
It was a period which will one day be designated as a wandering in the mists of hopelessness
And yet all could have been evident from the very beginning, for the old cannot be carried over into the new
The pressure of the development ordained by God will not permit it
The hands of the weavers of the threads of development had thus again and again to tear aside every endeavour marked by anything of the old, and finally to direct it towards becoming invisible before the world, for it could not be let through further, lest it besmirch the new which is to come in a purely genuine striving for the exalted values recognised in the Truth
The Ray of Parzival now brings the possibility of completing all this through the knowledge which is needful for the developmental advance of mankind in a true spiritualisation of everyday life
He who strives for the unfolding of his spiritual abilities, which he bears within himself, needs therefore first to free himself from the dogmas of thought which are for his connection with the Ray of Parzival a hindrance still enduring
And of such dogmas, which check the spirit in its advance upwards, there is still ingrained in men no small number
To this belongs, for example, even so small a thing as the making one's own and the clarifying of a pure intuitive perceiving, which is independent and free of the opinions and attitudes of other people
Already this thoroughly basic condition of the free will of man is to many a man a hindrance, for he does not know what in reality it means to examine freely with one's own intuitive perception
The old setting of his thinking is for him an immense boulder upon his path upwards
Men speak of intuitive perception, but often they mistake their very intuitive perception for the work of the intellect, which permanently presses to the fore with its findings and experiences, or perhaps with opinions taken over from without
It is so because the thought forms created for the taking up of attitudes towards certain matters of life are so strongly ingrained that they always squeeze themselves in front of one's own intuitive perception, and this even before it is at all recognisable to man
Such is the state with the greater part of men on Earth
This too, however, will gradually change as now the host of the spiritual and of the animistic servants of the Holy God draws ever nearer to earthmen
Men should therefore be on the watch through their inward stirrings, if indeed they still perceive these at all within themselves
Precisely through the vibrations in the inner being will there draw near to man the strengthening on the part of the helpers and leaders appointed for him
And these are here not only for the awakening but also for the leading of man in the unfolding of his spiritual abilities
There are indeed so many ways which stand ever at hand, but are not used
There is the gift of presentiment, the gift of flashes in which one may be permitted to glimpse future happenings, the gift of the ancient memories of the spirit, the gift of hearkening to the counsels of the animistic, the gift of close attunement with the exalted spirits working round about, who possess the most magnificent abilities in that widest compass which to men of today is unrecognised
Each of these abilities can in the end show itself beneficently also in earthly life, and this quite visibly as a sign of advancing upwards in spiritual maturity
These gifts are also in reality those slumbering abilities in the inner being of every man
For their use, however, as has already been mentioned, man needs to attain a certain degree of ennoblement, in order that the abilities laid within him may be permitted to radiate up to that highest degree at which there then comes about the supreme approach to the Ray of Parzival
Therewith there opens for such a man a wholly new chapter of his earthly life
There will gradually be transformed for him all that he needs for his fully valid life in the bodily covering of gross matter
He becomes in a certain sense new, for in the end his earthly shell also is transformed in a natural renewal of his cells
The spirit needs in its free flight upwards to irradiate all the shells so strongly that these yield to its pure and fervent striving and begin to change
So also the earthly body, and with it the nerve cells which form all the parts of the brain
And if the power of the spirit, mightily directed upwards to the Light, transforms the old cells into new, then there will be able to impress itself upon the manner of daily thinking a wholly new ordering of human life
It will penetrate as a wholly new kind of direction, wherein the earthly part of life will cease to be severed from the other parts belonging to the finer parts of the work of Creation
Life will then be grasped as a single whole harmony of the spheres, in which earthman is temporarily anchored within the bounds of the possibilities of the gross material body
But although these from the spiritual standpoint form a certain limitation, men can nevertheless experience a wholly different perceiving of the world around them, for through the unfolding of the spiritual abilities matter would become for them gradually more translucent than it is today
The bounds which the mantle of the gross material body forms for the spirit have never yet been fully made use of, for until now the spiritual abilities laid within the inner being of man have not been unfolded
And yet precisely these abilities would in their application swiftly afford many, indeed all prospects for a lasting release from the difficulties which today hold the human world in their grip
With the falling away of all the discords among men, upon which outrageous means of the gifts of nature are squandered, the forces of many men could be redirected to aims of a far higher kind
Although everything always needs to be kept in brisk and healthy movement, for it is needful to have regard to the maturity of individual men, it is possible to speak of a time of fulfilment and of sufficiency in all things for all
All that torments mankind today is wholly needless suffering
Men could very swiftly draw near to that fabled golden age upon Earth
This age is conditioned upon spiritual enlightenment, which will gradually permeate the thinking of all men
Spiritual aims are to become the foremost content of earnest investigation among all men
This is precisely a part of the coming time of the great spiritual enlightenment upon Earth
The investigation of the Laws of Creation, of their penetration and their working in the life of man, will in the near future become a most attractive field of earnest human occupation with such questions, however little this is yet known in the sub-consciousness of the majority today
Thereby there will open to men far wider connections in the knowledge of the courses of everyday happenings than is beheld today
This is because men are bound up with that invisible world far more than they suspect today
There is a lasting influencing of this world and of that
And precisely for this field there slumber in man the best dispositions of spiritual abilities
These abilities make it possible for him to reach beyond the gross material world here and thereby to perceive, or also ever more clearly to behold, the threads of fate, unto a higher awareness of all that finally shows itself as visible happenings in the world of gross matter
Man is for this degree of receptivity equipped in the best manner through the abilities of the intuitive perceiving of his inner being
He is also permanently surrounded by the helps of spirits who can come to him, that they may be permitted therein, through their leading from the finer spheres, continually to instruct him
In very truth it is so
Every man is in every moment surrounded by helpers who stand ready to afford to him himself, upon his degree of comprehension and of experiencing, new prospects of knowledge
This, however, is conditioned upon the good will in man, upon the genuineness of his effort for ascent, and also upon the lasting openness of a childlike pure inquisitiveness
The occupying oneself with questions about how the Laws of Creation work in all the moments of life
Also how therein precisely the animistic servants are active, as those appointed by the Will of God to fulfil the manifestations of the mentioned Laws of Creation
Nowhere around man is there any empty place
All is filled with active, ever-weaving life, which works upon and forms the effects of the Laws of Creation into that shape which men call the earthly world
To penetrate into this degree of knowledge will very soon be the most earnest concern of many men
It will be brought about by the pressure of happenings and also by the working of the helpers upon the human inner being, which needs to rouse itself more, in order that with its vibrations it may come before the learned intellectual manner of thinking
Thereby there will gradually come about also a complete transformation of the thought forms of the hitherto view of human life on Earth
The hitherto superficiality will wholly vanish, and with it that unworthy kind of thinking which for several centuries designated itself as atheistic materialism
The mask will fall which created the impression of scientific knowledge, and it will show itself that behind it there hid until now only a spiritual half-heartedness and an unwillingness to change anything in the hitherto ordering of mankind
Everyone who can but a little use his intuitive perception can easily recognise that the basic constituent of the human inner being is the spiritual spark, which bears within it a sense for nobility of character and for good, and this moreover of another kind than the human intellect is able to express
It is something which makes man courageous to occupy himself with those questions to which earthly science can never afford answers, for it draws only from the limited investigation of matter
Therefore earthly science can never give an answer to the question how and why life arises, and this in its manifoldness of manifestations everywhere where it may find this life
Only to the spiritual spark, in its living comprehension, is the answer given that life is afforded on Earth from higher planes, from which the radiation borne down has joined itself with the gross material shells and bodies of plants and of animals
It is the animistic radiation which quickens the world of nature from the smallest particles of life up to the greatest kinds of animals
And in the case of man it is then the spiritual kind, which asserts itself through the capacity for lasting development and ripening, if man himself does not of his own free will become rigid and stunted at some degree of maturity
New kinds of spiritual abilities can always be discovered and unfolded, which only wait to be used
But the time is yet to come which will perceptibly confirm that the spiritual in man has many abilities which would make possible for him the complete connection with all the helps and inspirations coming from planes that are attainable only through the purest will towards the Light and towards Good
Thereafter men will look back upon today's world as upon a time of great immaturity and also of backwardness, if we take into account where mankind could already be now, had it gone ever upwards in the unfolding of the spiritual abilities
The halting for a long time in the rigidity of materialism will then be looked back upon with bitterness, for precisely this period brought upon Earth much harm caused by men to the animistic servants in the world of nature
Much awaits expiation and amendment on the part of men
But the right advance and direction can go only by that way which unfolds from the development of the pure spiritual abilities
Anything else can be called only a low materialistic reasoning of the intellect, without connection with the real helps and inspirations of a higher kind
Now there is nothing further to wait for
It is evident whither the true direction leads, bringing ways out of so many blind alleys into which many men have let themselves be drawn by their own indolence
Out of mere comfortableness many have put on the mask which bears the designation of a materialistic disposition
This disposition has already fully proved itself to be the ruin of all that is higher and more noble in man
And it is therein quite indifferent which form of materialism temporarily prevails
It is thus quite indifferent whether it be a totalitarian or a more open form seemingly offering freedom, for it always holds good that materialism brings only decline and the destruction of the spiritual perceiving in man
Materialism we may also call all the forms of the hitherto religions, for in their case too everything was always directed only to expediency in matter, and thereby there swiftly unfolded rules and ordinances which rob of freedom the sublimity and greatness of the intuitive perception in man
Therefore, together with the shaking of all materialistic thinking, there may soon be expected also the shaking of the wrong orderings in all religious teachings
The new time that is coming makes the demand for the full and courageous independence of man as an individual
Only thus can there be attained the unfolding of all the spiritual abilities that are to be found within his inner being
No one should therefore tarry longer
There is here a strong call on the part of the spiritual helpers to the complete independence of each of men
In trust in the Light and in a lasting striving of the volition for a good and noble life, which presses towards harmony with the whole work of Creation, lies the liberation from the hitherto thought forms which hold billions of men in unfreedom
